Kumkumadi Oil: The Classical Ayurvedic Facial Oil, Explained
What Kumkumadi oil is, what goes into ours, and how to use it as part of a simple evening routine.
Kumkumadi is one of the best-known facial oils in Ayurveda. The name comes from kumkum, the Sanskrit word for saffron, which is its signature ingredient. It is a traditional preparation, applied to the face as part of an oiling routine. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Kumkumadi tailam.
What is Kumkumadi oil?
In Ayurveda an oil is more than a carrier. Herbs are steeped and cooked into a base oil, and the finished taila is used for massage and daily care. VedJyoti Kumkumadi Skin Oil follows this approach: a sesame oil base with goat milk and 16 named herbs, made for facial application and gentle massage.
What goes into it
We name every ingredient on the label, with nothing hidden behind “fragrance” or “parfum”. These are the ones that give the oil its character:
- Kumkum (Kesar / saffron): traditionally used to brighten and revitalise skin
- Chandan and Rakt Chandan (sandalwood and red sandalwood): cooling and calming
- Manjistha: traditionally used to support clear-looking skin
- Yashtimadhu (liquorice): soothing and nourishing
- Haridra and Daruharidra (turmeric and tree turmeric): purifying and protective
- Lodhra: toning and supportive
The full list is Sesame Seed Oil, Goat Milk, Kumkum, Chandan, Manjistha, Yashtimadhu, Sariva, Payasa, Laksha, Kushtha, Priyangu, Haridra, Daruharidra, Vacha, Nagkesar, Padmaka, Rakt Chandan and Lodhra.
A good formulation is the one that names everything inside it.

Oiling as part of an evening routine
A few unhurried minutes at the end of the day is a big part of why facial oiling has lasted for generations. The ritual matters as much as the oil. We don’t claim our oil lightens skin, removes pigmentation or treats any condition. It is a traditional facial oil, meant to be part of a gentle, regular routine.
How to use it
- Cleanse your face and pat it dry.
- Warm a few drops between your palms.
- Press and massage gently into the face and neck. Don’t rub hard.
- Leave it on. It works well as the last step of an evening routine.
Before you start
Do a patch test first. Apply a small amount behind the ear or on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. Keep it away from the eyes. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, or a known allergy, check the ingredient list before using it. Because the formula contains goat milk, it isn’t suitable for anyone avoiding animal-derived ingredients. Follow the directions on the label.
Natural doesn’t mean results are guaranteed. Skin responds differently to every oil. This is a traditional facial oil. It is not a medical treatment and doesn’t claim to treat any skin condition.
