Dashmool Massage Oil: A Traditional Ten-Root Oil for Postpartum Care
What Dashmool is, why Ayurveda has long used it in postnatal massage, and how to use our Dashmool Massage Oil gently and safely.
In many Indian homes, a new mother is given a period of rest and care after delivery, and oil massage is a traditional part of it. Dashmool means “ten roots”. It is a classic Ayurvedic combination that appears in many formulations, including those used in postnatal care.
What is Dashmool?
Dashmool is a group of ten roots, traditionally divided into five “greater” and five “lesser” roots. Our oil cooks all ten into a cold-pressed sesame oil base. Every one is named on the label, with no mineral oil and nothing hidden behind “fragrance”.
The five greater roots
- Bilva: soothes and nourishes skin
- Agnimantha: supports healthy skin
- Syonaka: soothes and calms skin
- Patala: nourishes and refreshes skin
- Gambhiri: supports skin wellness
The five lesser roots
- Shalaparni: nourishes and soothes skin
- Prishniparni: supports skin health
- Brihati: purifies and supports skin
- Kantakari: soothes and refreshes skin
- Gokshura: nourishes and supports skin
Ten roots, one oil, every one of them named on the label.

Massage as part of postpartum care
Warm oil, slow strokes and a few unhurried minutes are part of why postnatal massage has lasted for generations. The ritual is as much about rest and care as it is about the oil. We don’t claim our oil speeds recovery, relieves pain or treats any condition. It is a traditional herbal massage oil, meant to be part of a gentle routine.
How to use it
- Warm a small amount of oil between your palms.
- Apply it to the intended area of skin.
- Massage gently, using light, slow strokes.
- Follow the amount and timing printed on the pack.
Before you start
Do a patch test first. Apply a little behind the ear or on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. After delivery, ask your doctor or midwife before starting any massage, especially if you had a caesarean or stitches. Don’t apply oil on broken skin or on a healing wound. Keep it away from the eyes and, if you are breastfeeding, from the breast and nipple area. Stop using it if you see irritation, and follow the label.
Our oils are traditional personal-care products. They are not medical treatments, and they don’t claim to treat any condition.
